Speaker Bio: a Dr. Naweed Syed is Professor and Scientific Director of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He also served for 10 years as the Department Head Anatomy and Cell Biology, Research Director HBI at the CSM and also the Postdoctoral Program Director – Office of the Vice President (Research) from 2012 – 2016. Dr. Syed has served and chaired almost all of the University’s senior committees and was Special Advisor to Vice President Research for several years.Dr. Syed obtained his Master's degree from the University of Karachi, Pakistan in 1982, and PhD in neurophysiology from the University of Leeds, UK (1988). After a three year postdoctoral training at the University of Calgary (1988-1991), he was subsequently appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Syed has been the recipient of many international and national awards including: Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (USA), Parker B. Francis Fellowship (USA), Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Scholarships and Scientist Awards, Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR) Investigator Award and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh – to name a few. In 2016, Dr. Syed was awarded the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Medal of Excellence – the highest civilian award for research and innovation) from the Pakistan Government. He has also been the recipient of Canada -150 Medal from the Canadian Senate. He is the only Scientist in the world to have received such awards from two different countries in the same year. Most recently, he was award the Peak Scholar Award, Mr. Edhi Award for Community Service, University of Calgary’s top Community Service Award
This research has set the stage for brain repair after stroke, trauma, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s etc. by direct brain-machine interfacing technology. This breakthrough also offer the opportunity for the control of Brain-controlled prosthetic devices in patients who have lost their limbs. This study was highlighted in Time Magazine and on the Discovery Channel etc. Dr. Syed has published 130 papers in top peer-reviewed scientific journals including Nature, Science, Neuron and the Journal of Neuroscience.
