Speaker: Robert Weisman MSc, PEng, PMP, CD
Robert is a military and civil engineer and transformed into computer scientist/enterprise architect in the early days. He spent 30 years in the military ending up in Strategic Direction for the newly formed Defence Information Services Organization taking care of the integrated Command and Control portfolio. Afterwards he joined CGI as an Executive Management Consultant and started the global Enterprise Architecture (EA) Practice. After ten years he started Build The Vision Inc. which allowed Bob the flexibility to participate in the "pro bono" development of open standards in The Open Group (since 2004) and has been a major contributor to TOGAF 9, 9.1, and 9.2 as well as Vice-Chair of the Architecture Forum. Currently Bob is a PhD Candidate in e-Business at the University of Ottawa and part-time professor creating and teaching the graduate EA course. In 1993 (while Bob was Assistant Prof of Computer Science at the RMC), his students won the CIPS undergraduate prize and presented in Calgary at the CIPS conference.
Topic: Education, Ubiquitous Connectivity, Evolution of Software and Big Data: Through an Enterprise Architecture Lens
The role of organizations such as CIPS has become more important than ever. The connection of system control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems to traditional information systems and social media has been disruptive. Furthermore the evolution of SCADA systems from mechanical to electronic to software-driven has created the Big Data phenomenon. Today not one business process does not rely on software. Trouble is that 60% of software systems fail and, from an Enterprise Architecture perspective, trying to connect the dots, the weak link has been the individuals building (or buying) or integrating the individual systems. "Professionals" often do not have a holistic set of skills and underlying knowledge, and are focused on their specific area of endeavour. The challenge is that business value is often found in the seams between "silos". Robert, will take an EA and capability based perspective to highlight the problem and discuss directions that would enable Canadian educational institutions, companies and government to better leverage technology advances.
Registration Closes: Oct 22nd 2018 at 5pm ET.
