A discussion about the future of AI and its impact on human life

A computing scientist (Prof. Vadim Bulitko) and a philosopher (Dr. John Simpson) will discuss and take your questions about artificial intelligence (AI) from technical, ethical and philosophical perspectives.

The questions to be discussed include:

  1. What do we have to fear and hope for?

  2. What options do we have to control or influence the outcome?

  3. What ethical obligations do we have?

Questions and participation from the audience will be encouraged.

Vadim Bulitko is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta (Department of Computing Science). He received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999. Vadim is interested in building strong artificial intelligence as well as understanding intelligence and cognition in humans and animals. He specializes in real-time heuristic search, AI in computer games including interactive narrative and cognitive processes and models.

John Simpson holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Alberta for a dissertation using agent-based simulations and game theory to explore the disadvantages of ideally rational behaviour. He is currently Humanities and Social Sciences Specialist for Compute Canada, assisting Canadian researchers leverage the Advanced Research Computing resources available to them.
