People have a fantastic ability to entrain their movements with a rhythm. Everyone has no doubt experienced their foot tapping in sync with a favourite song. Consider the scenario where the song tries to match the tapping of your foot. In this talk I’ll explore the concept of sonification (sonification is representing data as sound) and I’ll apply this concept to data that comes from people’s movements with the goal of creating sounds that entrain with those movements. An interactive feedback loop emerges where sounds are designed to synchronize with movements and those movements are from people who are trying to synchronize with the sound. I’ll present applications of this auditory feedback loop to walking, cycling and speed skating for high performance training and therapy situations and talk about how to entrain the data with the people’s movements using a range of input and measuring devices from wearable sensors to cameras.
