Mentoring Program (BMMP) - A Call From Space

By Lucien Peron, I.S.P., ITCP, Cert.APM

What does the Canadian Space Program and CIPS have in common?

A few months ago I had the opportunity to briefly meet with our very own Col. Chris Hadfield. In the brief conversation that ensued I managed to ask him what impact mentoring had played in his life. His answer started with a single and yet powerful word: "Huge". Have you been or are you being mentored by someone? Do you remember those that mentored you and made you the person and professional that you are today?

CIPS' Brian Murray Mentoring Program (BMMP) is actively receiving mentor applications. If you, or someone you know is interested, please point them to this page or to the contact information included at the bottom of this article.

Chosen mentors in the CIPS Mentoring program will have the opportunity to pass on their experience and guide the next generation of IT professionals in their quest to advance the IT profession in Canada, help promote professionalism and seed the right set of values and skills. They will also have the opportunity to be challenged and learn from those being mentored, as they usually bring a fresh perspective and new ideas.

In the case of high schools, and considering the declining registration trend into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs, which fuel the future innovation that will take place in Canada, mentors will have the opportunity to influence their career choice and help in reversing that trend.

CIPS is offering three types of mentoring:

  1. Traditional One on One

  2. Group mentoring in High Schools

  3. Group mentoring in University / Colleges

Why would you want to mentor?

As Brian Murray -the person after whom the program is named- would have advocated, it is the right thing to do, a way to pay it forward. If you are interested, or if you have any questions or comments, do not hesitate to reach out to us via eMail to mentoring@cips.ca, or to me personally at lucienperon@cips.ca. Additional details about the program and the selection criteria will be provided to those that respond.

It is CIPS' hope that you will consider this call for action. When was the last time that you gave back to your profession?
