T+2: The What, Why, When and How of a Shorter Settlement Cycle in Canada

Any purchase or sale of securities in North America results in an exchange of cash for those securities three days later. North American regulators are now considering shortening this cycle by one third, or to two days, which is referred to as T+2. This seemingly minor change will represent one of the largest challenges to face the North American securities industry in decades as thousands of individual firms, and the technology firms servicing them, examine the readiness of securities settlement infrastructures for such a move. This overview looks at the challenges and timelines being faced as well as how Europe coped with a similar move in late 2014.
