StFX University Graduates Equipped for Demanding IT Careers, Antigonish, N.S.
St. Francis Xavier University is pleased to announce that its Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS) program, provided through the Schwartz School of Business and Information Systems, has been accredited by the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS), the association of Information Technology (IT) professionals in Canada.
This CIPS accreditation acknowledges that the BIS offered at StFX effectively prepares graduates for the demands of careers in the IT field. This is a prestigious designation, as only two Management Information Systems programs in Canada, thus far, have been awarded this accreditation.
The Information Systems department within the Schwartz School was subjected to a rigorous review conducted by a panel of experienced IT academics and professionals from across Canada. The accreditation process consisted of a faculty review (professional experience, teaching ability and research portfolio), interviews with current students and graduates to gauge the quality of the program from their perspective, a review of departmental resources (labs, etc.) and a detailed examination of the BIS program curriculum.
The accreditation demonstrates that the Schwartz School's BIS program is an innovative, well balanced (business and technology) offering that is very relevant to industry and offers students the foundation for a successful career in the IT field.
Chris Kendrick I.S.P., vice president of CIPS in Nova Scotia, had this to say, "Having the BIS program at St. Francis Xavier University accredited by CIPS is a significant achievement for the school and a great sense of pride for the Nova Scotia IT community. Given the projected demand for skilled resources in our industry, we look forward to welcoming the graduates of this program, knowing that they have taken the first steps towards professionalism in IT."
Neil Foshay, chair of the Information Systems Department at the Schwartz School, said "The CIPS accreditation echoes what we are hearing from industry. StFX BIS graduates are highly sought after by top firms such as IBM, Statistics Canada, Imperial Oil and many others. In fact, many of our students receive employment offers well before their graduation dates. Employers have been telling us for many years that we have a very high quality program. The CIPS accreditation reinforces that we have a great IS program here at the university."
The Schwartz School of Business and Information Systems is named after Gerald Schwartz, one of Canada's pre-eminent business leaders and founder of Onex Corporation, one of the country's largest companies. Mr. Schwartz's legendary business acumen and longstanding commitment to social responsibility is a fitting match to the ethos of the Schwartz School and the broader St. Francis Xavier University.
