"Robotics can be a strong foundation for an IT career"

Daryl Hepting and Simon Hagen

Date: December 9 (deadline for tickets: December 4)
Venue: Delta Regina, Trentino Room - 1919 Saskatchewan Drive, Regina, Saskatchewan S4P 4H2

There is an increasing focus on enabling students, of all ages, to experience computer programming. The Hour of Code event, begun last year, seeks to reach 100 million students around the world this year. Robotics presents an opportunity to engage young children with the basic ideas of computer science, and other STEM fields. These children become capable creators of new technology, on the road to exciting careers in IT and other fields. The talk will present efforts to bring the international FIRST LEGO League to Saskatchewan and a first-hand description of the immense positive impacts that robotics programs can have.

Daryl Hepting is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Regina. He is President of the Saskatchewan Chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association and Chair of the Outreach Committee of CACS/AIC (Canadian Association of Computer Science/Association d'Informatique Canadienne). This year, he is working to establish the FIRST LEGO League in Saskatchewan.

Simon Hagen is a 20 year old exchange student from Paderborn, Germany. He is in his third year of studies towards a degree in "Business Information Systems" at the University of Osnabrück. In 2007, he started participating in robotics competitions like the FIRST LEGO League, which has led to his commitment to get students excited about STEM-related subjects. He volunteers with several events that introduce students to science and engineering and he is one of the national organizers of the World Robot
Olympiad in Germany.
