Call for Volunteers: Opportunity to Participate in Edmonton Women in Technology Conference for Grade 9 Girls

The CIPS Women in IT conference is an annual Edmonton event focused at Grade 9 girls with the purpose of changing their perceptions about careers in IT.  A national issue affecting the IT profession and industry is the low percentage of females in the profession as well as the declining enrollment of females in math, science, and computer science courses.

Program Overview
The objectives of this one-day conference are to:

  • inform the girls about the variety of fun and creative careers that exist in IT;
  • encourage the girls to keep their future options open by taking math and science courses throughout High School; and
  • interest the young women in considering a future in Information Technology.

The conference begins with a “Welcome Address” where the young women will develop an understanding of the current climate in the IT industry and the benefits of stronger female representation in this exciting field.   Then, the young women will participate in a series of three sessions or workshops that will help them explore the way Information Technology impacts their daily lives and to appreciate the broad spectrum of career options that await them in the technology field.

Volunteering
The effort to plan and deliver the conference is 100% volunteer.  We encourage you to find out more about the different positions available – from female role models and team leaders, to workshop presenters to event operations.
