Become an IT mentor and inspire high school students to choose tech careers! (via CareerMash)

Summary: CareerMash is looking for IT professionals like you for its new Mentoring with CareerMash program to help high school students learn about tech careers through a flexible online mentoring format that will easily fit into your busy schedule.

Mentoring with CareerMash

The exciting career possibilities offered by the world of tech can appear overwhelming to students who don’t know how to become involved in these fields. That is why CareerMash is looking for IT mentors to participate in its new Mentoring with CareerMash online program.

As a mentor, your experience using technology in a variety of creative ways can help students understand the many opportunities available to them through tech-related careers.

Once signed up, the mentor can choose when they want to participate in an online session which involves about two hours over a three-week period of email interaction with students. The students are given a teacher-assigned activity to research the mentor’s specific career and the mentor provides feedback by email on the completed short assignments.

Benefits of the Program

·         Young people learn about the endless possibilities of today’s in-demand tech careers.

·         IT professionals gain valuable volunteer mentoring experience, show their passion for giving back to the community and make a difference in young people’s lives.

How the Program Works

·         Mentors are assigned to an online class containing no more than 15 students.

·         Students and their mentor interact by email through short activities assigned by their teachers.

·         Mentors respond to student activities by Friday of each week, at a time that is most convenient for them.

·         Each mentoring session takes place over three weeks requiring a total of two to three hours of a mentor’s time.

CareerMash Background

CareerMash is a program of the Canadian Coalition for Tomorrow’s ICT Skills (CCICT) – a not-for-profit whose members include major employers in retail, manufacturing, government, media, finance, information technology, and telecommunications. Our partners include school boards, universities, colleges, industry associations, and the governments of Canada, Ontario and Quebec.

CCICT and CareerMash exist to help make Canada a global leader in the 21st century digital economy by inspiring high school students to pursue tech-related careers.

We help bridge the gap between young people who want well-paying jobs after graduation and employers who find it hard to hire people who “get” tech.
