Europe is making significant progress in the promotion of ICT professionalism

Under the direction of the European Commission’s eSkills for the 21st Century project (the EU long-term skills agenda), an initiative has been launched to develop a pan-European foundational body of knowledge for ICT and a sustainable operating model for the promotion of ICT professionalism in Europe. The initiative is also a contribution to the Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs launched under the direction of EU President Jose Manuel Barroso and Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the Digital Agenda. The Coalition is addressing several related objectives including:

· Improving recognition of qualification across countries by stimulating take-up of a European certification scheme for digital skills of ICT professionals, based on existing European e-competence skills framework

· Offering training packages co-designed with the ICT industry

A call for tender was distributed in July and the bidding on it has closed. The organization chosen to conduct the work will likely starts in the New Year and has a one year time-line to complete the project. A steering committee will be created to supervise the body of knowledge and certification initiative, and IP3, of which CIPS is a founding member, has been invited to assume a seat on the steering committee.
