CIPS is celebrating 30 years of program accreditation

Since 1982, CIPS has been a leader in accrediting computing programs. From its early beginnings, under the leadership of CIPS Honourary Members such as Dr. Kelly Gotlieb and Dr. Wes Graham, the program has been recognized by educational institutions as the go-to resource to measure ones programs against industry accepted standards.

Our committed volunteers on the three CIPS accreditation councils are dedicated to improving education in Canada and world-wide. We would like to celebrate these volunteers and recognize them for the contributions they make towards the establishment of a profession for computing and IT.

The CIPS accreditation is one of the most successful programs in CIPS’ history, where it has grown to include over 100 programs in dozens of institutions in Canada and overseas. The program started out by offering accreditation services to computer science programs and currently includes the broad spectrum of computing related programs at both the university and college/technical institute level.

Choosing CIPS accreditation has many benefits. Programs are evaluated against specific criteria set by the profession, ensuring that each student has access to a high quality education. Employers also recognize the value of accreditation. They know that students will be well prepared to enter the global workforce. They also know that quality education is critical to our everyday lives.

‘As we enter an era of increasingly rapid change in computing, it is important for educational institutions to be able to demonstrate their graduates are fit for purpose. CIPS fully endorses the view that the public at large must have confidence that standards set by industry and the profession are being met. CIPS’ accreditation provides that confidence. When you think about CIPS accreditation, we want you to think about Quality in Education.’ Dr. Ken Takagaki, CIPS Director of Accreditation
