CIPS Ontario in partnership with Bennett Jones would like to invite you to the third of a series of luncheon presentations hosted this year.  Please take this opportunity to participate in what promises to be an engaging discussion on Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Emerging Technologies.

Date: Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Time: 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Location: Bennett Jones LLP - 100 King Street West, 34th Floor, Toronto, ON M5X 1A4

We hear over and over that innovation and entrepreneurship are the keys to economic growth, improved employment and social progress.  As a society, we seem to place significant, sometimes even magical faith in emerging technologies to solve the intractable problems of our era – from global warning to energy sufficiency, from a cure for cancer to extending the human lifespan.  However, we don’t often hear from those in the trenches, those who have innovated, who have created something really new and disruptive, who worked for years building something from nothing and against the odds, succeeded.

•        What are some of the key challenges at each stage in the development of a start up?

•        What issues can arise when there is more than one partner/entrepreneur?

•        What is the real difference between Angel and VC financing?

•        What do investors look for most in start-ups?

•        What makes them run the other way?

•        Can government programs and support help the entrepreneur?

•        What types of start-ups benefit most from incubators?

•        Is there really a difference between a tech start-up and a non tech venture?

•        How do you protect intellectual property when you can’t yet afford patents?

•        When should you start thinking about an exit strategy?

•        How are pre-revenue start-ups best valued?

•        When to sell; how to sell your start-up?

Our panel will be moderated by Jerrard Gaertner, CPA, CA, CA-IT/CISA, I.S.P./ITCP, President of the Canadian Information Processing Society of Ontario, himself an Angel investor and well regarded consultant to, and evaluator of technology ventures.
