Mobile Apps vs. Mobile Web
Rick Arter, Arter Mobilize

This high-level, non-technical presentation explores the differences between mobile applications native, or specific, to a particular mobile device and web-based mobile solutions that are generic in nature and therefore not device specific. The debate is not unlike the client-server vs mainframe, thick vs thin client, local vs cloud computing debates of past and recent. These other debates will be briefly considered to see if they reveal any insight into how the mobile app vs mobile web debate might play out. A thorough comparison of mobile apps to mobile web is provided to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each. Finally, examples of what others are doing is provided to give a feel for how the debate is playing out today in real-life situations.

With this level of understanding established, one should be in a better position to decide whether a mobile app or mobile web solution is more appropriate.
